Introduction

Thyroid-stimulatinghormone(alsoknownasTSHorthyrotropin)isahormonesynthesizedandsecretedbythyrotropecellsintheanteriorpituitaryglandwhichregulatestheendocrinefunctionofthethyroidgland.TSHstimulatesthethyroidglandtosecretethehormonesthyroxine(T4)andtriiodothyronine(T3).TSHproductioniscontrolledbyaThyrotropinReleasingHormone,(TRH),whichismanufacturedinthehypothalamusandtransportedtotheAnteriorPituitarygland,whereitincreasesTSHproductionandrelease.Somatostatinisalsoproducedbythehypothalamus,andhasanoppositeeffectonthepituitaryproductionofTSH,decreasingorinhibitingitsrelease.ThelevelofThyroidhormones(T3andT4)inthebloodhaveanadditionaleffectonthepituitaryreleaseofTSH,WhenthelevelsofT3andT4arelow,theproductionofTSHisincreased,andconversely,whenlevelsofT3andT4arehigh,thenTSHproductionisdecreased.Thiseffectcreatesaregulatorynegativefeedbackloop.TSHisaglycoproteinandconsistsoftwosubunits,thealphaandthebetasubunit.Thea(alpha)subunitisidenticaltothatofhumanchorionicgonadotropin(HCG),luteinisinghormone(LH),follicle-stimulatinghormone(FSH).Theb(beta)subunitisuniquetoTSH,andthereforedeterminesitsfunction.
