CNTFisapolypeptidehormonewhoseactionsappeartoberestrictedtothenervoussystemwhereitpromotesneurotransmittersynthesisandneuriteoutgrowthincertainneuronalpopulations.Theproteinisapotentsurvivalfactorforneuronsandoligodendrocytesandmayberelevantinreducingtissuedestructionduringinflammatoryattacks.Amutationinthisgene,whichresultsinaberrantsplicing,leadstociliaryneurotrophicfactordeficiency,butthisphenotypeisnotcausallyrelatedtoneurologicdisease.Inadditiontothepredominantmonocistronictranscriptoriginatingfromthislocus,thegeneisalsoco-transcribedwiththeupstreamZFP91gene.Co-transcriptionfromthetwolociresultsinatranscriptthatcontainsacompletecodingregionforthezincfingerproteinbutlacksacompletecodingregionforciliaryneurotrophicfactor.CNTFisasurvivalfactorforvariousneuronalcelltypes.Seemstopreventthedegenerationofmotoraxonsafteraxotomy.
