Streptococcuspyogenesisthecauseofmanysignificanthumandiseases,rangingfrommildsuperficialskininfectionstolife-threateningsystemicdiseases.Infectionsusuallybegininthethroatorskin.Themostconspicuoussignisastrawberry-likerash.InstancesofmildS.pyogenesinfectionsincludepharyngitis(strepthroat)andlocalizedskininfection(impetigo).TheinvasionofS.pyogenesanditsmultiplicationinthefasciacanleadtonecrotizingfasciitis,alife-threateningconditionrequiringsurgery.Throatinfectionslinkedwiththereleaseofcertaintoxinsleadtoscarletfever.OthertoxigenicS.pyogenesinfectionsmayleadtopotentiallylife-threateningstreptococcaltoxicshocksyndrome.S.pyogenesmayalsocausediseaseintheformofpost-infectious"nonpyogenic"(notassociatedwithlocalbacterialmultiplicationandpusformation)syndromes.Theseautoimmune-mediatedcomplicationsdevelopfromasmallpercentageofinfectionsandcompriserheumaticfeverandacutepostinfectiousglomerulonephritis.Acuteglomerulonephritis(inflammationoftherenalglomerulus)canarisefromstreptococcalpharyngitisorskininfection.TheStreptococcuspyogenesbacteriumisacutelysensitivetopenicillin,eventhoughcertainstrainshavedevelopedresistancetomacrolides,tetracyclines,andclindamycin.
