Introduction

Chemokine(C-Cmotif)ligand8(CCL8)isasmallcytokinebelongingtotheCCchemokinefamilythatwasoncecalledmonocytechemotacticprotein-2(MCP-2).TheCCL8proteinisproducedasaprecursorcontaining109aminoacids,whichiscleavedtoproducematureCCL8containing75aminoacids.ThegeneforCCL8isencodedby3exonsandislocatedwithinalargeclusterofCCchemokinesonchromosome17q11.2inhumans.MCP-2ischemotacticforandactivatesamanydifferentimmunecells,includingmastcells,eosinophilsandbasophils,(thatareimplicatedinallergicresponses),andmonocytes,Tcells,andNKcellsthatareinvolvedintheinflammatoryresponse.CCL8elicitsitseffectsbybindingtoseveraldifferentcellsurfacereceptorscalledchemokinereceptors.ThesereceptorsincludeCCR1,CCR2BandCCR5.
